JuJitsu Training - What To Watch

December 19, 2007

Okay, you’re at your class, you’ve got your in front of you showing you some new move, what do you watch, do you try to look attentive and look them in the eye to show you are interested? Do you watch their hands, their arms, their feet? There’s so much going on you often watch the wrong thing and miss the most important bit.

I follow my instructors lead, he always used to demonstrate moves 3 times. Watch the hands on one occasion, watch the feet the next, then try to take in the whole thing.

Two many people focus purely on the hands and forget the feet, then they end up shuffling into a move and wondering why they’re not getting the same effect, the feet play just as much a part in the moves as any other part of your body, I can’t really stress it enough, focus on the feet just as much as the hands and twists of the joints.

Think I repeated myself in that one enough to emphasise my point?

Quick Training Tip

December 17, 2007

A simple, very quick one, Train hard!

This doesn’t mean you have to bounce each other off the floor, you can if you want but not necessary.

You react how you train, so if you train against weak punches that actually come nowhere near you, that’s how you’re going to react when the pressure comes, and it’s no good at that time blocking a punch that comes to the side of your head, because the real thing has jst bypassed your arm and knocked you out!!!

There’s a really famous saying, The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle!

I like it!

Don’t Give Up!

December 16, 2007

I have a question

Do you get frustrated because you can’t do certain things?

I know I do. What is the best way to deal with it? Impossible to say really isn’t it, I don’t have the answer,I’ve been there myself, these days I have dodgy fingers, I don’t mean they have a mind of their own, they are weak, not as strong as they used to be and painful due to arthritis and an old job I used to have! Still that’s a different story, what is relevant is that now I can’t do the same things I used to be able to do a few years ago. I got so down hearted watching people do these chokes, strangles and grappling moves that required strength of grip that I was on the verge of quiting. It took me quite a while to get over it and get my head back in gear, and when it came it was so simple, it was the realisation that I don’t do Judo!

Pressure Points

December 15, 2007

You might have heard people talking about pressure points before and not had a clue what the heck they were talking about.

Me Too!

But I would bet you’ve heard of accupuncture? Pressure points in the martial arts use the same points, we just use them in a different way, Accupuncture, or accupressure is used to restore the bodies natural energies for health benefits, We use them in the other way, we either drain or over load the energies of the body to either cause pain or collapse of our opponent.

Why Has No-One Heard Of JuJitsu?

December 14, 2007

I don’t know about you, but how many times have you had it where someone asks you what you do, you say JuJitsu and they say is that like Karate or Judo then?!!!!!!

I don’t mind as much these days, think I’m mellowing in my old age, but that used to wind me up something chronic!!!

Why is it that no-one has heard of our art even though it has been around for centuries? Yet they have heard of arts that it spawned, like Judo and Aikido, how’s that happen then?!

What Is The Most Deadly Martial Art?

December 12, 2007

Strange question really, but one that does get asked.

It’s a difficult one to answer because by the nature of them, Martial Arts where designed for the battle fields, and as such if trained correctly and not in the manner of a sport, then they all have the potential to be deadly.

At the same time, any impact to a person has the potential to be deadly, and I think this is something that we don’t emphasise enough, I certainly don’t. All it takes is a weak spot on your attacker and a simple enough strike, one that 99% of people would shrug off could kill them.

The Basics Of JuJitsu

December 11, 2007

Whilst each school will vary greatly due to each instructor adding their own twist and style, the basics of JuJitsu pretty much all remain the same.

Circular movements. JuJitsu being a rotational art, then you should find that the majority of movements follow this motion, we do have the odd directional move but not that many.

Like most martial arts Stances are part of the basics. We don’t have quite the same stances, for example our main fighting stance is quite a short stance, especially when compared to some of the main stances from the likes of Shotokan and Wado Ryu Karate but that doesn’t mean you discount it, it’s just as important, and important that you work on it and get used to it. Whilst it’s good to be able to respond and fight from any position, if you have a good base it makes it so much easier, listen to your Sensei, the foot position is important for blocking, body evasion, getting in to your throws, and throwing your punches, having the feet at the right angles can make all the difference and let you get your maximum power into your strikes.

What Is The Best Martial Art For Self-Defence?

December 10, 2007

We are aiming for this site to be a good resource for Self Defence as well as Martial Arts so this is a very pertinent question and one I get asked a lot.

Pretty much all have something to offer, and a trained Martial Artist will pretty much always beat an untrained attacker on the street. However, there are stories around about trained people in a confrontation reacting how they normally train, for example, one story I heard was of a TaeKwondo guy reacting by trying to score a point, a light fast kick to the head, it had no effect!! This guy got hit quite a bit and eventually turned it around and beat his attacker, but that’s not what you want in a self-defence situation.

What Is Gracie JuJitsu?

December 9, 2007

Gracie JuJitsu is a derivative of Brazilian JuJitsu which if you trace it back is ultimately a derivative of Kano Jiu Jitsu.

I’ve said that before and people really don’t like it, but from my readings around Kano sent some of his students to “spread the word” about Kano Jiu Jitsu, or Judo as we more commonly know it. One of the students he sent around was Maeda who worked with Gastao Gracie to promote the art.

From here is another bone of contention, Many see Helio Gracie as the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitus, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but there are those that argue that Carlos Gracie was the elder son, who started to train in the art first as Helio was a sickly child and was unable. So Carlos was the founder. That’s up for discussion and debate by people who really care, it’s politics and as such doesn’t interest me. These days the term Gracie JuJitsu is trade marked by Rorion Gracie and there are many other arms of the Gracie family who have their own schools, their own instructors and their own slight variations and they often trade and train under their own christian names.
